Questioning

Welcome back to class 2A's blog. This week has been very short but we have been working just as hard.

In literacy we have continued looking at the traditional tale, Little Red Riding Hood with a focus on questioning. The children worked in small groups to come up with questions to ask the characters from the story. Some of the children volunteered to act as the characters to answer the questions, which I was most impressed with. The children are growing in confidence and building good peer relationships, which is lovely to see.

Today the children were presented with problems that each of the characters from the story encountered, for example the wolf asked the question, "How can I make friends?" The children worked well in pairs and came upon with some creative answers. Some of the children reflected on their own experiences which was interesting to hear about.

In science we have been looking at different materials. In today's session we investigated the different materials we see in every day life. We went on a tour around school to see what different materials we could find. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and soon realised that different materials are all around us.

He huffed and he puffed and he blew the house down!

The children have been continuing the story of Little Red Riding Hood in English by role playing a police investigation today. We analysed each of the characters from the story before creating a list of questions to ask. The children soon learnt the language of questioning and the correct punctuation to use. They created some wonderful questions for their investigations. We have continued to explore numbers by partitioning them into thousands, hundreds, tens and units. The class have started to complete addition sums using their knowledge of simple addition and the rules they know about adding tens to complete trickier number sentences. They really enjoyed using Dienes blocks to help them with this. In Geography we continued to develop our knowledge of world mapping by learning the 7 continents and 5 main seas. The children really enjoyed playing the Geospy game to help them learn this - perhaps you'd like to try it at home!

Below are some photos of the Science lesson from last week - after learning about materials and their properties the children had to build houses that would survive the Big Bad Wolf's visit. I have also included a few photos of the children creating their puppet theatre show box for Little Red Riding Hood.

This week in 2D

We have had another great week in year 2D. Our class is really coming together and working like a team, a fantastic year lies ahead.
below are some photos from this week, we have been learning about parts of a castle and why people used to build castles and who used to live in them.

Kaitlyn and Zhou Zhou working hard.
Will and Elizabeth furiously colouring their castles.
Tavleen is very busy here!
Lawrence and Hampton.
Tommaso.
Lucas is busy, Hello Jayden.
Sean and Toby collaborated very well today.

Year 2 PE

Pupils have continued to work with great enthusiasm and focus during the SAQ unit of work currently being covered. A wide variety of activities have been used, including some traditional Primary School games that pupils are already familiar with. The fundamental movements that are developed as a result of participation in these activities will impact upon pupil progress across the PE curriculum and ECAs.

Class 2E Making sentences and writing words

The children, this week, have done a range of cacti items, including sequencing the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. These children were given the task of reconstructing sentences from the story. They had to work together to read the words and decide what order to place them in. They all worked really well together.

We have also been learning how to write numbers as words. We played some internet games on the interactive whiteboard and then the children played their own game. Again the children worked together, in pairs this time, to see who could write each number the fastest on their whiteboards. The element of competition really focused their minds!

Story Sequencing and Place Value in 2C!

In continuation of our Traditional Tales unit, children have been learning to sequence the story 'The Gingerbread Man'. Working with others in the class, children were given a section of the story and worked to arrange themselves into the correct order. After some debate, they succeeded!
In Maths, the class have been learning how to use the mathematical equipment called Dienes blocks. This allows children to physically represent the value of each digit within two and three digit numbers by showing their hundreds, tens and units. This helps make numbers real for children of a young age and helps lay the foundation for later mathematical understanding. They had great fun working together to solve the answers using the equipment!
