2A - The first week back

It is lovely to have the children back in school feeling fresh and re-energised. It's hard to believe we are already in the summer term - the year has gone by so quickly. We have lot's of fun and exciting things planned for this term. In english we have started looking at different stories by the same author. The first author we will be focusing on is someone quite familiar and already a children's favourite, Julia Donaldson. We will be spending time looking at different texts and how they compare, identifying similarities and differences. The children will begin to get a deeper understanding of the different authors and their styles.

So far we have started to read Room on the Broom. After reading the first part of the story the children were asked to predict the ending (if they already knew this they were asked to think creatively and come up with an alternative ending to the story). The children were grouped together and wrote a script and acted out their endings for the rest of the class. We watched them today and some were very amusing. The children put a lot of thoughts into their ideas and used loud clear voices and actions when presenting to their peers. here are some photos of them in action:

Then we read the story and thought about how our predictions matched the real ending.
Ask your child how the story ended and if this matched up with what they thought.
To get a better understanding of the story were asked to work in their groups to order the events and retell using time words

In maths over the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on measure. We have started to look at length and the equipment we use to measure e.g. ruler, metre stick, trundle wheel and measuring tape. I have introduced the units of measure millimetres(mm), centimetres(cm) and metres(m)and we have discussed when we use them, for example to measure a door we would use metres but when measuring a pencil we would use cm. We have had lots of fun with this so far, taking the measurements of a house, drawing around ourselves and measuring the different part of our bodies and using rulers and metre sticks to measure objects around the school. Here are some photos of them hard at work:

The children are let loose to measure objects around the classroom:

The children recorded their findings and were also asked to estimate before they measured the objects
