2E Room on the Broom and Measuring

This week we have begun our unit of work on stories by the same author. We are reading stories by Julia Donaldson and have started with Room on the Broom.

We read and discussed the story, identifying the fact that it rhymes, and the children made predictions about what they thought might happen next at various stages in the story.

In talking partners, the children summarised what were the main events on each page. When they all had a good understanding of the structure of the story, they worked in groups to dramatise it. They added their own dialogue and the narrator filled in the details of the story in their own words. The children worked well together in their teams and really helped each other to keep their own performance ticking along without too many pauses.

Here are some photos of the children engaged in their performances.

Also this week, we have been measuring in mm, cm and metres. We did a small tour of the school to measure objects such as light switches, door handles, windows and grains of sand and decided whether we should use mm, cm or m to record the lengths. The children also had great fun drawing round one of their friends and measuring the length os their arms, legs, feet, head, whole body, etc.
