2C Money and Instructions

2C have been introduced to the British currency this week. They have learnt its coins, their values,  corresponding language (pounds and pence) followed by the symbols £ and p.

First using coins to match money amounts on the Interactive Whiteboard, children then enjoyed using a set number of coins to make a certain amount e.g. which four coins can be used to make fifty pence (50p = O + O + O + O). The use of apparatus such as coins is a great and fun way to make money real to children of this age. This will set a good foundation before our future learning of how to work out change when buying items.

Moving on from our fiction work involving Traditional Tales, children are now being introduced to the non-fiction unit of Instruction Texts. Children learnt the need to put instructions in an order, to alter their language and use 'bossy' verbs such as move, put, place, stick etc. - they enjoyed this concept the most!

As a fun way to introduce the topic, children started by learning how to follow oral instructions to move objects in a picture to a specific area of it. They then tried to follow oral instructions to draw a specific picture unknown to them. Children were then randomly selected to stand in the centre of the class and close their eyes whilst the rest of the class saw an image of people in poses. Another child was then selected to give instructions to the children in the middle to see if the person giving the instructions could be clear enough to make the poses match. Much enjoyment and hilarity ensued! It was a fun way to introduce the topic before they progress to learning more about the features of instructions and writing their own.
